Inclement Weather

EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION

During school closures or start-time delays, we will post information on the district and school websites and inform news media.

You can also call our emergency closure information number: 503.565.4070

The district is now using SchoolMessenger to contact staff with delay and closure information. Contact numbers are taken from the Employee Access Center. For information on how to check or change what numbers used to contact you, click here.

If you would like to receive emergency text notifications, you must opt-in by texting "Y" to

The district also uses the FlashAlert System to notify news media and subscribers about emergency information.  You can still subscribe to FlashAlert, but it may be duplicative of the SchoolMessenger notifications. Click here to find out more about FlashAlert and who should subscribe.

The following guidelines from Policy IC/ICA and negotiated agreements are to be used in cases where school is cancelled or delayed due to inclement weather or other emergencies:

IF SCHOOL IS DELAYED:

In the event of an unanticipated late start, all employees report to work at their regular times, if possible. If unable to report at the regular time, the employee is to report to work before the students arrive at school. Employees have a responsibility to notify their building contact person if they are going to be delayed beyond the start of school for students.

If the employee is delayed more than two hours or cannot make it to work at all because of road conditions, he/she must enter the absence in the Absence Management and report the absence as Unpaid Leave, Vacation or Personal Leave, if available.

The morning preschool sessions will be cancelled. (Pre-K Leaders of morning preschool sessions still need to report to work as described above.)

IF SCHOOL IS CLOSED:

Teachers and Other Licensed Specialists do not report to work and do not call the Absence Management System to report an absence since all closure days after the first closure day will be rescheduled later in the school year.

Educational Assistants and Other Nine-Month Classified Employees do not report to work and do not call the Absence Management System to report an absence, since the day will be rescheduled later in the school year.

Custodians (Ten and Twelve Month) and Maintenance Workers must report to work.  If they cannot make it to work, then they call the facilities secretary and report the absence as Unpaid Leave, Vacation or Personal Leave, if available.

Lead Secretaries, 12, 11, 10.5 and 10 Month Classified Employees must report to work.  If they cannot make it to work, then they call the Absence Management System and report the absence as Unpaid Leave, Vacation or Personal Leave, if available.

Food Service Workers and Managers do not report to work and do not call the Absence Management System.  Food service workers will make up the days due to inclement weather.  If they have reported to work before receiving notice that school is closed, they need to document the actual hours worked on their time sheets.

Administrators, Confidential Staff, Managers and Supervisors must report to work.  If they cannot make it to work, they need to call their immediate supervisor and report their absence in the Absence Management System as Flex Leave, Non-Contract Time, Vacation or Unpaid Leave.

MISSED DAYS MAY BE MADE UP ON THE DAYS DESIGNATED AS “POSSIBLE SNOW MAKE-UP DAYS” ON THE 2018-19 SCHOOL CALENDAR.  EMPLOYEES WILL BE EXPECTED TO WORK AS USUAL ON ANY RESCHEDULED DAYS.
